JVP will remain resilient undaunted by downgrading: Tilvin

Denouncing the notion that it had suffered a political death, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today said it was very much alive and would remain a major player in the field of Sri Lankan politics.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said the party had not lost its vote base when compared to the last provincial council election. He said the JVP would be an essential tool for the people of this country to win their rights. “People will need the JVP in their struggle to have the cost of living reduced, salaries of the working class increased and to have democracy restored,” he said.

He said the Democratic Party led by former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka which emerged as third force according to the results of yesterday’s election was not a challenge for the JVP.

“A newly formed party getting a formidable amount of votes in an election had always been a phenomenon in the country’s politics,” he added. He also noted that the Democratic Party was not an alternative choice of the people, but only a replacement.

Referring to the TNA’s success in the North, the JVP General Secretary said the ruling party should be held responsible for any adverse effect created by it.
“ It is the government which pushed the TNA towards extremism by using communalism to win votes in the South,” he said.
