The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Central Committee which met after yesterday’s resignation of its former leader and international affairs secretary Somawansa Amarasinghe, has decided to discuss matters with him in an effort to woo him back to the fold, propaganda secretary Vijitha Herath said.

He said the CC had also decided to create awareness among the party rank and file on the latest development to assure them that there was no rift in the party.

Mr. Herath said some elements were deliberately spreading rumours with the objective of creating unrest among the members and to destroy the JVP. He was referring to the some reports which had been posted on websites that a majority of the central committee members were with Mr. Amarasinghe.

Meanwhile, in a media release the JVP said discussions with Mr. Amarainsghe had started the moment he announced his resignation from the party.

“The JVP had not accepted Mr. Amarasinghe’s resignation and had decided to do its utmost to bring him back in the fold,” the media release said. The party was confident that Mr. Amarasinghe would soon return to the fold.

Mr. Amarasinghe, who quit the JVP on Thursday, said he decided to do so because the JVP had failed to read the political pulse prevailing today and had failed to take the advantage and capture power. He said he hoped to form a new party. (Yohan Perera)
