The JVP today expressed its support to the trade union action announced by the university teachers demanding a pay hike with immediate effect.

Addressing a press conference, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that the government had deceived university academics since 2007 with empty promises of salary increases. Mr. Silva said that the demand of university teachers for a pay hike was very reasonable.

In South Asia, he said, the lowest monthly salary for university teachers was paid to university teachers in Sri Lanka, and that it was as low as Rs. 20,750 for a junior lecturer and Rs. 57,750 for a senior professor. (Kelum Bandara)
