UNP Parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardane has complained to Pope Benedict the XVI on what he called disturbing trends in Mannar and the threats allegedly faced by the Bishop of Mannar.

In a lengthy letter to the Pope, Dr. Jayawardane had also requested the Vatican to intervene in the matter.

A copy of the letter has been sent to the Catholic Bishops Conference in Sri Lanka as well.

Addressing a news conference in Colombo, Dr. Jayawardane said the government should take action to arrest this dangerous trend in Mannar. “Communalism in Mannar should be avoided at any cost as it is an area which is recovering after a 30 year old conflict,” he said. (YP)
