JHU General Secretary and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said his party was ready to discuss the UNP’s draft constitution.

“Under Ranil Wickremesinghe in1994, the UNP proposed to do away with the unitary state. It is good that it is talking about creating a unitary state once again. If the UNP is willing to do so, we are ready to discuss its new constitutional reforms though we are not clear about some of the proposals like the three options proposed in place of the executive presidency,” the minister said.

Referring to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, Mr. Ranawaka said the JHU was fully against the 13th Amendment and had presented a bill opposing it.

“We are fully opposed to the 13th Amendment. But we have been flexible to discuss five facts concerning the 13th Amendment with any political party.

Government has put forward two of them to the cabinet today. We call upon every political party to join hands to find a solution in this regard despite political advantages,” he added. (Ajith Siriwardana)
