Japan is urging the Sri Lankan government to swiftly complete the resettlement of internally-displaced persons and also carry forward a political process for national reconciliation.

Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada, in a statement today, said that Japan will support efforts by the Government of Sri Lanka to achieve these objectives.

“Japan congratulates on Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa’s reelection as the president of Sri Lanka in the presidential election held on January 26. Japan hopes that the Government of Sri Lanka will swiftly complete the resettlement of internally-displaced persons, which has made progress since last October, and that the people of Sri Lanka will unite in to reconstruct the economy. Japan also strongly expects that, under the leadership of President Rajapaksa, the Government of Sri Lanka will steadily and swiftly carry forward political processes for national reconciliation,” the Foreign Minister said in a statement.
