Jail clash; 5 plead guilty

The CID informed a Colombo Chief Magistrates Court that five prisoners had pleaded guilty for conflicting with the police during a search operation on November 7, 2010 at Welikada Prison and they were sentenced from six to seven months rigorous imprisonment by a Special bench of Judges appointed by the authorities under the Prison Act.

The CID informed Additional Magistrate of Colombo Ms. Praharsha Ranasinghe that from 48 prisoners had been identified by the investigating officers for conflicting with police during the search operation  at the Welikada Prison  on  November 7, 2010, 47 were produced before a special bench of judges appointed by the prison authorities to inquire.

They said from those 47 prisoners 5 had  pleaded guilty for the charges  and the prisoners  Dumida Galappathy, Shantha Fernando, Jayaratna Hettige, Sanjeewa Sarath Kumara and  S.A. Amarawansa were  sentenced six to seven months rigorous imprisonment by the  special bench of judge according to the offences committed by them. (T. Faroook Thajudeen)
