The Indian company involved in the reconstruction of the northern railway tracks  had sought the government’s help to remove encroachments along the track between  Palai and Kankesanthurai without delay, officials said today.

IRCON  International Ltd General Manage S. L. Gupta told the Daily Mirror that people  had heavily encroached lands along this track, and therefore they had to be  removed to begin reconstruction work.

The Cabinet has already decided to award  the contract to IRCON to construct this railway track, and the memorandum of  understanding is to be signed between the government and the company soon.  Besides, IRCON has already started work on the tracks connecting Medawachchiya  and Talaimannar via Madhu, and Omanthai with Palai.

Train services on these  lines were discontinued after the war erupted in the 1980s. (Kelum Bandara)
