The JVP charged today that threats and intimidation was rampant in the Eastern Province

JVP politburo member Sunil Handunetti said there were many instances where several JVP candidates had been questioned by unknown people.

“Unknown people who claim to be members of the intelligence wing have on numerous occasions questioned several candidates on various aspects. When I was in Batticaloa last week they came and asked me what I’m doing here as well,” he said.

Mr. Hanudunetti said this could be viewed as an attempt to intimidate those opposing the government.

“This is a shameless attempt to suppress the opposition, I brought this issue up during a meeting held yesterday with the participation of senior Police officials and members of the department of elections. An additional secretary to the department also spoke out and said that even he was questioned regarding information about candidates,” he said. (By Hafeel Farisz)
