​Indian nabbed with Rs.16 m worth gold at BIA

A 25 year-old Indian man has been detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake when he attempted to smuggle gold worth over Rs. 16 million, this morning, the Customs said.

The suspect had attempted to board a flight to Chennai with two packets containing 34 slabs of Gold biscuits, weighing 3,399.26 g valued at Rs. 16,996,300.90 concealed in his baggage, Customs Spokesman Leslie Gamini said.

He said that the suspect was detained by the staff of Airport and Aviation Authority and handed over to the Customs for further investigations.
Following the inquiry, the goods were forfeited and a penalty of Rs. 40,000 was imposed.(Sanath Desmond)
