Indian arrested with Euros

An Indian air passenger who attempted to smuggle foreign currency including Swiss Franks and Euros valued more than Rs.7.9 million to Singapore was taken into custody at the Katunayake International Airport by the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) with the assistance of Airport Customs.

He had 39,000 Euros and 16,000 Swiss Francs in his possession at the time of the arrest, police said. The suspect was given a purgative to recover the foreign cash. He had concealed the notes in his rectum after carefully packing it, Superintendent of Customs M.V Jayathilaka said. 

 “He was about to board the12.30am flight to Singapore today; the foreigner was arrested just as he passed the immigration clearance”, he said.
The PNB informed us about the suspect as they had received a tip off. The suspect was handed over to us by the PNB and we are currently investigating the incident and the suspect is now in the custody of Airport Customs. (Supun Dias)
