India making a statement at the 24th session of the Human Rights Council, said that it encourages the UN Human Rights Commissioner to “continue to provide advice and technical assistance to Sri Lanka in accordance with” the Council’s resolutions.

The statement was made in reference to the ‘oral update by the High Commissioner for Human Rights on promoting reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka’.

Earlier two resolutions were passed against Sri Lanka calling for a variety of actions that the Sri Lankan government needed to undertake to address the human rights concerns raised, and the High Commissioner yesterday “hinted” at the possibility of International Intervention if the government fails to conduct a credible investigation into allegations of human rights abuses.

“We take note that the High Commissioner had welcomed the government’s acceptance of 53 additional LLRC recommendations and had highlighted the need for implementation of the remaining recommendations contained in the LLRC report for concrete improvement in Human Rights. Accordingly, we encourage the High Commissioner to continue to provide advice and technical assistance to Sri Lanka in accordance with UNHRC resolutions,” the statement read.

The seven point statement, which was read while the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment, which in effect negated the land powers vested in the Provincial Council through the 13th amendment, said that India looked forward to the full implementation” of the 13th amendment “and beyond it”.
