While claiming that the agreement to provide warships to Sri Lanka was signed several years ago, India today said if Tamils were to be harmed by those warships, it would take suitable action.

“If Tamils were to be harmed by India giving the warships to Sri Lanka, then we will talk to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and take suitable action. The agreement to provide war ships to Sri Lanka was signed several years before,” Union Minister of State V. Narayanasamy told media at the Chennai airport.

“We have already advised Sri Lanka that the ships should not be used in any confrontation with Tamils, if it happened, we will inform the Prime Minister,” he added.

He also said that the Congress party did not like Sri Lanka to be divided. “Both Sinhalese and Tamil people must act in conformity with Sri Lankan constitution, the Congress Party does not like that country to be divided,” he said.

Further, he said that on the basis of Rajiv-Jayewardene Accord (The Indo-Lanka Agreement of 1987), the 13th Amendment to the Constitution should be implemented in full and the Indian government had been persuading the Sri Lankan government in this regard.
