Increased alcohol consumption could affect development: Chandrakanthan

Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathuri Chandrakanthan said the increased alcohol consumption in some parts in the East including in the Batticaloa District, could affect the development of the area dispute good results achieved this year.

Speaking at a public function in Vantharamoolai in the Batticaloa District over the weekend, Mr. Chandrakanthan said the paddy production in the province had increased up to 108,510mt in 2011 compared to 86,357mt in 2010. He said the livestock sector had also made considerable progress this year with milk production at 13,500 litres in 2011 compared to 7700 litres the previous year.

In addition he said there is a considerable development in the fisheries sector as well. “Therefore the Eastern province had achieved much since the establishment of the Eastern Provincial Council in 2008,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
