Household accidents had increased by 14 per cent with 114 cases of injuries resulting from violence during this year’s New Year period between April 14 and 16 had been reported to the National Hospital, Chief Nurse Pushpa Ramyani Soyza told Daily Mirror online.

Ms. Soyza said 706 patients were treated during festival period and this was a decline of seven per cent from last year.
Due to the nationwide awareness programmes on the careful use of fire crackers during the festive season, fireworks-related injuries were also low this year with only two cases being reported.

Road accidents saw a 32 per cent decrease from last year with only 106 accidents being reported to the Colombo National Hospital.

Meanwhile Kalubowila Teaching Hospital Director Dr. Anil Jayasinghe told Daily Mirror online that 399 people received OPD treatment while 82 were warded for in-patient treatment.

Only 45 cases of injuries from road accidents were reported to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital this year and this is in contrast with the 75 reported last year.

Dr. Jayasinghe said sports injuries from Avurudu games and festivals had seen an increase this year with 11 such cases being reported as against the one reported last year.  (Daily Mirror online)
