Illegal TV station raided

Two persons who had operated a television station in the Mahaiyawa area in Kandy, without a valid license, have been taken into custody by the police.

The suspects were operating the illegal television station using satellite technology. The radio station has been operating for a considerable time period, the police said.

Police recovered equipment ranging from radio sets, electronic devices, electric codes, amplifiers and equalizers during the raid.

The raid was carried out after gathering valuable information from public and residents in the area about the illegal activity.

The purpose and the objectives for operating such a TV station are yet to be established. The police had found this TV station, when they conducted a raid based on a tip off.

The police noted that the detained suspects are residents of the Mahaiyawa area. The police had also taken the equipment used by the suspects into their custody.

The Kandy police are investigating into the incident and questioning the suspects under detention orders.

The police also have deployed a special team into the Mahaiyawa area to arrest the associates of the suspect who managed to escape during the raid. (Supun Dias)
