Illegal immigration: Australian campaign in the East

The Australian government has upped its campaign against illegal migrants to Australia in the Eastern Province, it is reliably learnt.

A house to house leaflet campaign is now on in Batticaloa District, which advised general public that no one coming by boat to Australia would be allowed to settle there.

“As per the new law which came in to effect from 19th July, illegal immigrants coming by boat to Australia will be sent to Papua-New Guinea.

“Even if you were accepted as refugees, you will be settled in Papua-New Guinea. Others, who are found to be no refugees, will be returned to your own country. Many Sri Lankans are being returned now, therefore, do not trust the false promises of people smugglers.

“The money you are paying is not for a ticket to travel to Australia,” the leaflet said.(Vadivel Sakthivel)
