Deputy Minister Nishantha Muthuhettigama who spoke to the Media over the phone from Singapore said he would return to the country in two days.

“When something happens there is no one to look after us. I will be back in two days to ensure the victory of the President. I left the country because the Police got into a “Kulappuwa” (panic attack) and tried to arrest me,” he said.

Meanwhile, Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said the Minister was not prevented from leaving the country because there was no travel restriction issued against him.

“There was only an arrest warrant issued against him but no travel restriction was requested from the Magistrate. Therefore the Department of Emigration and Immigration could not take any action against him,” he said.

However, SSP Rohana admitted that the Police could have arrested the suspect prior to fleeing. “Any police officer could have arrested him but there were no policemen at the time,” he said. (Sanath Desmond and Jehan Gunasekera)
