I have the power to steer party: Ranil

29 January 2012 05:12 pm

Opposition UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today claimed that by virtue of the party’s Constitution he had full powers to give orders and take decisions to ensure strict discipline in the party.

However he said anyone in the party had the democratic right to advise him under the party constitution.

Addressing UNP representatives of the Kandy district local authorities he said he was planning to form a national federation of Provincial Council Members and Pradeshiya Sabha Members to represent the party.

“Today the rule of law has collapsed. Personalities in the ruling party and students are not equal before the law of this country. The UNP will mobilise the masses under its leadership to fight against this injustice. All public representatives of the party should give leadership to the campaign first. I will not need any others. They must give leadership to fight the oppression,” he said.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, Parliamentarians Ravi Karunanayake, Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene, A.H.A. Haleem, Kandy Municipal Council Opposition Leader Neranjan Wijeratne, Provincial Council members Chitra Shrimathi Mantilleka, Padma Lal De Alwis, Chanaka Eilapperuma and several local politicians attended the meeting.
