Poilce are hunting a Sri Lankan housemaid who allegedly stole more than BD8,000 worth of gold from an Indian family.

The 48-year-old has been accused of taking 450gm of jewellery from the house of her employer in Manama on Saturday. A complaint has been lodged at Hoora Police Station and an Interior Ministry official confirmed officers were searching for the maid.

An illegal worker, she was taken on by the Indian family, who have two children, two weeks ago. "My wife gave birth to a premature baby seven months ago and she wanted a maid urgently to care the baby so she could go to work," said the husband, who declined to be named.

"On Saturday, it was my wife's off day and she stayed at home, but I went to work. "Later in the day, she went to my elder son's school to attend parent-teacher meeting while the maid stayed at home with the baby."

The husband said after returning from work he noticed the maid's belongings and the jewellery were missing.

The expatriate, who MWPS action committee assistant head Evon Bhaskaran confirmed came to Bahrain in September 2010, had reportedly run away twice before. Sri Lankan honorary consul general P B Higgoda was also aware of the case. "We are doing our own investigation," he said.
