Housemaid to be compensated

A Sri Lankan housemaid tortured by her employers in Qatar is to receive Rs. 648,000 as compensation. Qatari Police have instructed the employers of the housemaid to pay the amount as they were found guilty of having tortured her

“The mistress of the house at which the housemaid was working had burnt her hand. The housemaid in question has returned to Sri Lanka,” Deputy General Manager of the Foreign Employment Bureau L. K. Ruhunage said.

The housemaid had lodged a complaint after she had been burnt by her employer on November 30 having commenced working at the employer’s residence house on November 18.

Qatari police had also ordered the housemaid’s employer to pay for her air fare in addition to the fine, which was equivalent to two years pay.
