Video: Hospital closure creates history: UNP

UNP Kalutara District Parliamentarian Ajith P. Perera today said a hospital had been shut down for five days for the first time in history due to poor administration of the government.

“Baduraliya Hospital which is in a remote area has been closed for five days because of the government’s poor administration. It is the responsibility of the government and Western Provincial Council to take steps to reopen the hospital and ensure the security of the hospital staff. A hospital is not closed even in a war torn area. At least emergency services operate during a strike. How can a hospital be closed down for a comparatively minor issue? This raises questions about the government’s administration and governance. Can a police station, a school, a prison or a hospital be closed down on the grounds that a staff member was assaulted or humiliated?” he asked.

Mr. Perera asked why the government could not provide security to the doctors of the Hospital if they had any threats from the people rather than deploying more than 200 police personnel where a fast unto death was being held.

“A police squad of over 200 officers has been deployed at the location where UNP Parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma and some other local politicians are staging a fast unto death. Police assaulted some innocent civilians who were protesting. Why can’t the government provide this security to the doctors if they have any threats and take steps to reopen the hospital?’ he asked.(Ajith Siriwardana)
