An SP-led probe is being conducted on the attack on UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s convoy at Balapitiya last evening.

He is reported to have attacked by a group of pro-government supporters while on his way to visit the kith and kin of fishermen who died when their boats capsized due to the stormy weather.

Mr. Wickremesinghe was unhurt but his state-owned vehicle was damaged.

The Balapitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman, a close confidant of a powerful UPFA parliamentarian from the area, is alleged to have led the attack.
Police said statements were being recorded from eyewitnesses but no arrests have being made so far. (Supun Dias)
