Heroin case - Eight jailed for life

Eight people were today sentenced to life imprisonment after they were found guilty of possessing and smuggling 37.4 grams of heroin at Wellampitiya in 2001.
 
The case against the eight accused -- Abeysiri Gunawardenage Gamini, Nagaratnam Rathnayagam, Mohammed Jalee Mohammed Nasar, Udaya Ramanadan, K.V. Sivanadan, Ekanayake Mudiyanselage Samaraweera, Mohammed Hussain Rizmi and Wimal Chandana – was heard by Colombo High Court Judge Lalith Jayasuriya. 

The Attorney General filed indictment against nine suspects under the two counts of possessing and smuggling 37.4 grams of heroin. However, the fifth accused Mohammed Iqbal died during the time of the trial.  (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
