The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has asked the residents of the Kegalle, Ratnapura and the Matale District to be vigilant as continuous heavy showers in these areas could trigger landslides.

Ten districts including Matale, Ratnapura and Kegalle had been identified by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) as prone to landslides.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology warned of heavy showers in the coming days as the inter Tropical Convergence Zone where the winds from the two hemispheres meet had set itself over Sri Lanka.

Accordingly thunder showers that might go up to about 100 mm, lightning and heavy winds were predicted in the coming days.

A spokesman from the Department said heavy showers had been reported in all parts of the country including the hydro-catchment areas today.

Showers have been particularly heavy in the central hills according to the Met. Department.

Highest rainfall of 77.5mm was recorded from Matale, while a rainfall of 70mm was recorded from Kandy.

Bandarawela recorded a rainfall of 47.5mm, Badulla 23mm, Horton Plains 41mm and Deniyaya 15mm. (Yohan Perera)
