Health officers to issue spot fines

Health officers are to be given legal powers to impose spot fines on individuals and institutions that neglect health warnings on mosquito breeding grounds.

Heath Minister Maithripala Sirisena stated that a series of amendments will be introduced to the Mosquito Breeding Control Act with powers to health officers to impose spot fines, enter private and public premises for inspection. The Act will also be amended to restrict, the current two week period, given to destroy mosquito breeding grounds to one week. (SAJ)
