The Health Ministry today began inspection on beauty parlours to check their suitability and competency to engage in beauty culture, a health ministry spokesman said.
Health Ministry spokesman W.M.D. Wanninayaka said Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena instructed the Cosmetics Devices and Drugs Authority (CDDA) Chairman Dr. Hemantha Benaragama to conduct an island-wide survey on beauty parlours following the mysterious death of a school teacher after allegedly attending a beauty culture session at a private beauty parlour.
“The Minister has received complaints that many of the beauty parlours are not registered under the CDDA as required by the law, and many of them are run by unqualified persons putting the lives of those who use them at risk,” Mr. Wanninayaka said.
The CDDA teams will also check the suitability of the equipment and drugs used for beauty therapy at these places and the qualifications of those who do the treatment. All unauthorised beauty parlours will be sealed and legal action will be taken against them under the Cosmetics Devices and Drugs Law, he said.
The CDDA expects to re-register all qualified beauty parlours in the country after the Health Ministry inspection concludes by the end of this month, he added. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)
