UNP MP Mohanlal Grero revealed in Parliament today that schoolchildren have been addicted to certain narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances made available to them in the form of hair gel and Ayurvedic pills.

MP Grero said that schoolchildren get the psychotropic effect once they apply it on their head.

“Recently, I conducted a survey on schoolchildren at six schools in the coastal areas of Dehiwela and Mt. Lavinia. I noticed even Grade 5 or 6 children chewing babul which is a kind of narcotic. It is available to them in the form of betel and arecanut,” he said.

He was speaking during the Debate on the Regulations under the Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.  Mr. Grero said the schoolchildren sometimes use such items sold to them as Ayurvedic pills.
