The government has decided to import coconut with immediate effect from several Asian countries to control the ever increasing coconut market, the Internal Trade Ministry said.

“The government will permit traditional coconut exporters and the Coconut Development Board to import coconut from Malaysia, Kerala and Indonesia before the festive season starts considering the exorbitant prices prevailing in the local market,” Internal Trade Secretary Sunil S. Sirisena said.

He added that the government expects to bring down the price of a coconut with the import. (SAJ)
