The Ministry of Trade will import some 20 million eggs per month until the island wide price of an egg reduces to Rs.11, Minister Johnston Fernando said today.

“This Saturday we will be receiving the second consignment of 3 million eggs and likewise we will be importing five million eggs to the country every week,” Minister Fernando said. The Ministry will continue to import until the price of an egg reduces to Rs. 11, he said.

According to him the prices of eggs had fallen considerably after the arrival of the first stock of imported eggs from India on Tuesday.

When the Minister was queried about the prices of eggs in India he said Sathosa planned to make a thin profit margin and unlike the Indian prices the prices of the eggs in Sri Lanka were decided on the impact it will have on the industry and consumers. (SR)
