Govt. to give relief to prisoners on death row

Changes with regard to prisons and inmates are on the cards with the new government contemplating on bringing in new legislations to provide some relief to those who are sentenced to death.

Deputy Minister of Justice Sujeewa Senasinghe said at a public function at Welikada Prison premises this morning that this would be one of the major changes that the new government was going to make.

He said the government was looking towards introducing legislation to provide legal provisions to send drug addicts straight to rehabilitation centres after trying them in courts.

The Deputy Minister said a judicial audit would be carried out on the prisons soon to assess the situation.(YP & DS)
