Historical sites, particularly those in the eastern province, are continuously vandalised, therefore, the government should intervene to protect them for the future generations, ruling party MP Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera said in Parliament today.

Delivering his speech during the committee stage debate of the National Heritage Ministry, Ven. Medhananda Thera said that the ancient Dagoba of Kudumbigala Vihare had been damaged by treasure hunters.

He said that he examined the place  and found a leopard occupying the crate created by these treasure hunters in the Dagoba.

“Had that leopard occupied the place earlier, those treasure hunters could have been scared away easily,” he said in lighter vein.
He also noted that historical sites in Wilpattu too had been damaged by such treasure hunters. (KB, YB)
