While claiming that any kind of construction carried out in a National Park was illegal, the main opposition UNP today urged the government to make a statement on the controversial housing complex being constructed within the Wilpattu National Park.

“Any step taken against the environment is wrong. If there is a housing complex being constructed within the Wilpattu National Park, the government should make an official statement on the issue. The government spokesman should declare whether there is any illegal housing complex in the National Park,” UNP Leadership Council member and its Spokesman Kabir Hashim told a news conference.

Earlier the media reported that a large scale housing complex was being built within the Wilpattu National Park leading it to destruction. And it was reported that a minister was backing the housing project with funds received by a foreign country to resettle Muslim IDPs.

“There are internally displaced Muslims from war but they have not been resettled yet. If the government wants to resettle these IDPs, they should follow a proper and legal method without destroying the environment,” Mr. Hashim said adding the government should take responsibility for any consequence arising from the issue.
