Government should listen to the countries that had pledged their support to Sri Lanka in Geneva and implement the recommendations made by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) as these nations have stressed that these recommendations should be implemented soon, the main opposition UNP said today.

UNP Senior Vice President Lakshman Kiriella told journalists today that the nations which had pledged tosupport Sri Lanka including Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia had wanted Sri Lanka to implement these recommendations while the other nations including USA that is bringing the resolution had wanted the same. “Whole world and is telling the government to implement the LLRC recommendations and why not do it and win their confidence,” he asked.

Mr. Kiriella explained that the government is facing this situation as it had lost the confidence of the world by its own actions. He made this point by recalling that the government had failed to implement the interim recommendations made by the LLRC in 2010. He therefore said the government had failed to provide information on the detainees to their relatives and to end state terrorism as recommended by the LLRC in its interim report. (Yohan Perera)
