5 October 2012 03:04 pm

Opposition United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today called for a public debate on the budget with the participation of all political parties, civil groups and trade unions in addition to the customary parliamentary debate on the subject.

Mr. Wickremesinghe who was speaking at a meeting attended by several political parties, religious and trade union leaders said such a debate of at least two days duration would enable a broad discussion on allocation of funds for important sectors such as education and health.

He said the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Front Line Socialist Party (FSP) should also join the UNP for a discussion on resolving the deepening crisis in the education sector. (Yohan Perera )
