The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today met the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and complained about the election law violations being blatantly carried out by United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidates.

JVP front-liner K.D. Lalkantha told the media soon after meeting Mr. Deshapriya that the Government was engaged in flagrant violation of election laws.

“We met the Elections Commissioner today to raise concerns about this. The latest election law violation by the Government is to carry out illegal electioneering under the pretext of a 10-day long signature campaign from Tangalle tomorrow, targeting the six districts in which elections are being held,” he said.

Mr. Lalkantha said the Commissioner agreed with the JVP that the signature campaign was a violation of election laws and assured he would prevent it from being held.

Meanwhile, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said the Government was resorting to this kind of illegal election propaganda campaigns because they had lost public support.

“Although at the beginning of its campaign, the Government believed it was easy to win the March 29, it has now realized that the Government had lost the support of the public who are disgusted and disillusioned with it. This had made the Government to put aside all ethics and are misusing all state resources and flagrantly violating election laws to win this election at any cost,” he added.  (Sanath Desmond)
