Golden family nabbed at BIA

A 48-year old woman accompanied by her daughter (20) and son (17) were arrested with jewellery worth Rs. 6 million in their possession, at the Bandaranaike International Airport today.
 
Customs officers found 8 yellow gold bangles, 1 necklace, 2 silver-plated gold anklets, 2 chains, 7 pendants and one gold bracelet among the items.
 
Customs Spokesman Leslie Gamini said the suspects who were from Kotahena had allegedly attempted to smuggle the contraband to India. The jewellery was confiscated and the suspects released on payment of a Rs. 300,000 fine, he said.(Deepa Adhikari)
