The Government Nursing Officers Association (GNOA) will carry out a protest on Thursday outside some 100 hospitals in the country urging the government to address their grievances, failing the union will go on strike until their demands are met, the union said today.

Union President Saman Ratnapriya said all 10,000 nurses in the GNOA in addition to another 4,000 supporters will take part in the protest. “Since we have still not received a positive response from the government over our concerns we shall protest. If the government still does not respond thereafter, we shall stop our work until they give us what is due to us,” Ratnapriya said.

The union held discussions with Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Ravindra Ruberu last Friday and will meet again tomorrow (Wednesday). However, until all their grievances are addressed the union will continue to protest, he said.

The union had requested the authorities to provide promotions to senior nurses, nurses uniforms, to issue circulars on important matters pertaining to nurses transfers and other matters, salary increments and the provision of cell phone allowances and others were among the many demands made by the union.
