GMOA ask for increase in transport allowance

The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) today urged the government to provide an increased transport allowance of Rs.33,000 due to the increased fuel prices.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Sankalpa Marasinghe said the GMOA may take a decision to go on strike if the government does not increase the allowances and would be compelled to engage in more private practice.

During discussions between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other senior government officials and the GMOA in January it was decided that the Disturbance, Availability and Transport (DAT) allowance would be raised from Rs.12,500 to Rs.33,000. However the allowance has still not been given, he said. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
