The government today announced that the next general elections would be held under a new electoral system- a mix of the First Past the Post System and the Proportional Representation - replacing the current preferential vote based electoral system.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Rajitha Senaratne said President Maithripala Sirisena had summoned the Elections Commissioner, Attorney General and the Surveyor General for a discussion on reforms of the electoral system where the elections commissioner had assured to expedite the introduction of the new system.

“The new system is a requirement as we promised to deliver during the presidential election campaign. The cabinet on Wednesday agreed for the reforms prior to going in for the election,” he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
