The Colombo Fort Magistrate yesterday directed the Controller of Immigration and Emigration to prevent a Sri Lankan student studying in Japan
from leaving the country as he had allegedly cheated a gem businessman of Rs.11.4 million.
Lodging a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), a director of a gem and jewellery shop at the World Trade Centre in Fort told police that a Sri Lanka student studying in Japan had befriended his father while he was engaged in business activities in Japan.
The Sri Lankan student had been able to build trust with businessman and thereby the student had undertaken to sell gemstones valued at Rs.11.4 million in Japan with the promise of returning money within a very short period of time. The complainant alleged that the student did not fulfil the promise and many attempts to contact him over the matter had been futile.
Meanwhile, the complainant further informed CID that he had received information that the suspect was currently living in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the CID sought a court order to prevent the suspect from leaving the country. Having considered the submissions, Colombo Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne ordered the Controller of Immigration and Emigration to prevent the suspect from leaving the country. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
