Robber gang arrested

Four suspects were arrested for stealing cash, jewelry and other valuable items belonging to Tamils who travel by train by claiming to be from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The gang had produced fake CID ID’s and taken the Tamils out of the passenger train and robbed them. The suspects arrested by the police were on the run after several special police teams had been deployed to arrest them, police media spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said.

The suspects were arrested in the Veyangoda railway station and another in the Katana town. According to SP Jayakody, the suspects have being involved in similar robberies in Polgahawela, Mirigama, Veyangoda, Ragama and Fort railway stations.

The police discovered that the gang had mortgaged the jewllery. The police are further conducting inquiries into the incident to recover items and find out other charges that are under the name of the gangs.
