The Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) stated that they will be taking legal action against the circular issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on May 3 instructing the academics to provide a three month notice prior resignation.

FUTA President Dr. Nirmal Dewasiri told Daily Mirror Online that the circular issued by the UGC is illegal as section 51 (III) of the Universities Act no 16 of 1978 does not refer to any particulars of the resignation process of voluntary administrative positions.

“We have also received news that some academics have been threatened and harassed by university authorities and have refused to accept their resignation letters. We would like to once again point out that these actions are illegal,” he added.

Meanwhile Dr. Dewasiri stated that the trade union action of resigning from voluntary administrative positions has been extremely successful so far. (Lakna Paranamanna)
