Fully equipped camps for each Army battalion: Army Chief

Outgoing Army Commander Jagath Jayasuriya said a process was underway to provide each battalion of the Army with a fully equipped camp with modern facilities.

“Those camps are being built and they will come on an annual basis, not in one go and this is the third year we are continuing with the project with budgetary allocations,” he said.

Speaking to Daily Mirror he said the Defence Secretary has approved the project and that land selected would be acquired by the government if they are in private hands and handed over to the Army.

“Each camp will be getting pre-fabricated buildings. Every month we are getting a shipment for its development,” he said.

Responding to charges that soldiers were having fewer beds, the second longest serving Army Commander in the country said when he assumed duties there were only 50,000 double beds for 200,000 soldiers but steps were now being taken to make  40,000 double beds for the Army, which would solve the problem largely,” he said.

“It is a long process but we are doing our best. I have to tell you that Army camps look better now,” General Jayasuriya said. (Supun Dias)
