The Police Headquarters said today that it will deploy its full strength today to arrest individuals for speeding and drunk driving during New Year celebrations.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that the more road and foot patrols will be carried out extensively in Colombo and its suburbs.

The police have advertised in public places urging the public not to drink and drive. “No relief will be given to any traffic offender,” he said.

According to the Accident service of the National Hospital, reckless driving was the leading cause of most of the hospital admissions during the Christmas season which stood at 580.

A rise in road accidents was reported during this season in comparison with the incidents which were reported last year.

“We have also received information of nearly 15 vehicle robberies, especially motorbikes during the festive season. So we urge the public to be more watchful while parking their vehicles,” he said. The police urged vehicle users to park their vehicles only in car parks.

The police also urged the public not to engage or intervene in unnecessary brawls. “The police will take every possible step to prevent these unfortunate incidents,” SP Rohana said. (Supun Dias)
