An employee of a private recruitment company who forged the signature of the Director General of the Mercantile Shipping Services to issue documents to shipping engineers to get lucrative jobs abroad has been remanded.

The suspect who had forged signatures and official seals had done so to over qualify shipping engineers so as to make them more suitable for foreign employment and increase their salaries.  An engineer who had been sent in this manner was sent back to Sri Lanka and black listed by a foreign shipping company.

After receiving a complaint the Fraud Investigations Bureau had commenced investigations and taken the suspect into custody. The police have also recovered several official seals, certificates, applications and other material used for to create these forged documents. Further investigations are being carried out by the Fraud Investigations Bureau. (Daily Mirror online)
