Minister of Agrarian Resources Services and Wild life S. M. Chandrasena today denied reports that 50 elephants had been killed during the recent floods. Minister Chandrasena told Daily Mirror that only four elephants in Habarana, Giritale, Kavudulla and Minneriya wild life parks had died.

He said all wild life parks in the flood hit areas have been open for visitors including foreigners, however roads in some parks have been damaged by the floods and that arrangements have been made to reconstruct the roads.

Referring to the other animals he did mention that a large number of cattle and poultry had died although the exact numbers was yet to be finalized.

A survey has been commenced in wildlife parks to ascertain the exact number of deaths of the wild elephants and other animals. (Yohan Perera)
