Forged driving license scam busted

The police are investigating a person in Colombo who was engaged in preparing forged driving licenses for a considerable time period.

The police took steps to conduct investigations on the individual following the arrest of a person, a member of the Civil Defense Force in the Aralaganwila area in Polonnaruwa, with a forged driving license after gathering vital information about his fake license.

He had confessed to the police that he obtained the driving license from an individual in Colombo. However the operator of the scam had fled the area following the incident.

Following his arrest the Aralaganwila police was able to arrest 14 more suspects including ten other members of the CDF who possessed the fake documents.

The investigating officers said that these fake licenses bore certain similarities to the genuine ones, however the officials of the Department of Motor Traffic confirmed that they are forged ones.

Sources also revealed that these fake licenses were in respect of light vehicles, motor bicycles and three wheelers and a sum of Rs.16,000 had been charged for the issue of a single license, and they had been issued within two or three days. (Supun Dias and K.G. Karunaratne)
