Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka told the second General Court Martial today that the court martial had been set up to put him behind bars and assassinate him politically.

Starting the Defence case, Fonseka told the Court Martial Tribunal that he was not afraid of going to jail to liberate the country from corruption.

Sarath Fonseka is being tried on charges of alleged contravention of military procurement procedure while he was the Commander of the Army and having finished the prosecution case, the defense case was started yesterday.

Before the case began, Judge Advocate Shavindra Fernando had informed the accused Fonseka that he could make a statement from the witness box.

Fonseka had also said, “I have no faith in this Court Martial. I certainly know that I will not get justice from this Court Martial and irrespective of the evidence in this case I will be convicted and jailed,” adding, “I categorically deny the charges that have been leveled against me. I was and I am unaware that Danuna Thilakaratne had anything to do with Hicorp.” The trial will continue tomorrow.
