Floods displace thousands

Two people have been killed and 62,068 persons representing 20,336 families have been affected as a result of the floods experienced in many parts of the island, the Disaster Management Centre said.

DMC said that 6244 persons who were affected due to floods are in 56 camps situated in the island. Two deaths were reported from Matara and Welimada who had drowned and eight others were also injured. 188 houses were sustained extensive damaged while 1237 houses were partially damaged in the past few weeks due to rain.

In the Killinochchi district, 19 camps have been set up to accommodate the persons in the area who worst affected by the floods. In addition camps have also been set up in Hambanthota, Nuwara Eliya, Puttalam, Gampaha, Kandy and Vavuniya Districts.

830 families had been displaced in Hambanthota District, 194 families in the Kurunegala District, 78 families in the Kandy District, 1176 families in the Puttalam District, 2225 families in the Gampaha District, 7533 families in the Mannar District, 1218 families in the Vavuniya Distrcit1405 families in the Jaffna District, 3330 families in the Killinochchi District and 1120 families in the Mullaitivu District have been affected due to floods according to the DMC.  (Supun Dias)
